Time flies - it’s been nearly a decade since I delved into the world of Transformers toys. Given the plethora of new molds released in recent years, and driven by my unwavering passion for Transformers, I’ve finally decided to pen a post summarizing my years of toy insights.
Note1: This post is heavily subjective; I recommend readers enjoy it alongside their cherished toys 🙂
Note2: You can treat this article as the editor’s take on Transformers movie toy reviews 🙂

The Transformers movie series can generally be divided into three phases:
Transformers 1-3: This era marks the franchise’s golden age, presenting a complete trilogy. The character designs from this period left a lasting impression, resonating deeply with audiences. The transformation mechanisms and components aligned well with fans’ expectations of Transformers.

Transformers 4-5: During this phase, the franchise began its decline. Despite maintaining top-tier status, the anthropomorphic mech designs introduced by director Michael Bay sparked considerable controversy. Many felt these designs deviated from the essence of Transformers. Coupled with disjointed storytelling and inconclusive endings, these films were dubbed the “worst Transformers movies.” Nonetheless, they did introduce several distinctive characters, and the associated toys garnered significant attention.

Spin-offs & Transformers 7: In the post-Bay era, the franchise’s glory waned, with diminishing box office returns and challenges in sustaining the IP’s momentum. Both films functioned as spin-offs with minimal narrative connection to each other or the Bay-directed quintet. Character designs underwent another transformation, leaning towards Generation 1 (G1) aesthetics. While opinions on these designs vary, I firmly believe that the G1 style doesn’t suit live-action films. Some argue that the poor box office performance was a repercussion of Transformers 5, perhaps. Setting the films aside, this period still introduced memorable characters and some popular toys, but the golden trilogy era seems irretrievable.

Across these three phases, I’ve compiled a list of 121 characters, aiming for comprehensiveness. I’ve omitted minor characters and repaints for brevity. Presented in chronological order, let’s dive in!
Rating Criteria:
Evaluations are based on three dimensions: accuracy to the source material, transformation design, and recommendation index. The recommendation index serves as an overall assessment, factoring in price and value for money. Generally, it reflects my personal fondness for the figure.
First up, let’s welcome our Autobots from the original trilogy!
001 Optimus Prime

Throughout the trilogy, Optimus Prime’s portrayal is vivid, embodying the quintessential traits of an Autobot leader. His design is strikingly handsome. Although he doesn’t receive as much screen time as Bumblebee, his position as the top Autobot is unassailable. Each of Michael Bay’s five films concludes with an Optimus Prime monologue, moments that always stir my emotions. In “Transformers 4,” Drift aptly remarks, “That’s Prime!” In terms of combat prowess, Optimus continually upgrades: in the first film, he struggles against Megatron; by the second, he can take on three adversaries simultaneously (though perhaps Megatron had weakened). As the story progresses, he acquires the Matrix of Leadership, Jetwing armor, and the trailer, privileges unique to him!

This was the first Optimus Prime figure I encountered, and I enjoyed it immensely at the time. In hindsight, the mold has its flaws, but it holds sentimental value for me. Design-wise, it features a top-heavy build with a faux chest that’s merely a panel, overly bulky lower legs, and legs that can’t fully straighten - a design that’s hard to defend. The transformation has some ingenuity but is otherwise unremarkable. With the dominance of Studio Series 32/44 today, few would opt for this version.

AD12 Optimus Prime

Essentially a premium repaint of the “Transformers 2” Voyager Class, it’s a budget-friendly version of the 2009 Leader Class Optimus Prime. For a Voyager Class figure, it boasts numerous parts and a complex transformation - a testament to the quality of older figures! In terms of accuracy, it’s decent; the vehicle mode is impressive, and the robot mode is quite handsome. The main drawbacks are the thin legs and a slight bow-legged stance. Overall, it’s a gem among older figures, and I still frequently pair it with Studio Series figures. Remarkably, this design dates back to 2009!

Studio Series 05 Optimus Prime

The awkward accessory pack has arrived! When this figure was first released, it was quite well-received, even prompting Wei Jiang to produce an oversized, premium version that sold well. Its design is commendable, with excellent articulation, and the vehicle mode, while not as stellar as the “Transformers 2” Voyager Class, still surpasses that of Studio Series 32. Unfortunately, the robot mode’s chest design is a letdown. After the release of Studio Series 32, this figure became more of an accessory pack, losing much of its appeal.

Studio Series 32/44 Optimus Prime

The best Voyager Class Optimus Prime with an unbeatable robot mode! The chest and overall physique are even more accurate than the Masterpiece Movie Series MPM04. Studio Series 44 adds the Jetwing, modifies the abdomen, and features a gradient on the truck’s front. However, the Jetwing trailer and weapon rack feel like a cash grab, especially given the unfriendly price and low value for money. It’s a classic case of squandering potential. I recommend Studio Series 32!
Note: I hand-painted mine; the result isn’t perfect.

Once a legendary figure, this official classic design was a star product, and even today, it holds its ground. Later releases featured a chromed faceplate and an attractive paint job, especially in vehicle mode. By today’s standards, the design has some shortcomings: an oversized backpack, a bulky robot mode (which could be a plus?), and it can barely fit with Masterpiece Movie Series figures. If you’re interested in experiencing it, it’s still worth acquiring.

MPM-04 Optimus Prime

The official Masterpiece series made a grand entrance with MPM-04, which, upon its initial reveal, left many fans in awe. The iconic leader of the Autobots seemed to have stepped right out of the movie screen, and expectations soared. However, upon release, the figure faced significant criticism. Reports highlighted subpar build quality, incomplete paint applications, and even issues with the transformation process. Many collectors, including myself, were disappointed, especially when essential tabs failed to secure properly, making handling frustrating. Some suggested that over time, parts might align better, but I no longer own the figure to verify this claim. Additionally, the paint quality was lacking.

Note: At the time, the accuracy and design were considered top-notch. However, with the advent of newer figures like Unique Toys’ Challenger, MPM-04 may no longer hold up. My ratings are based on the context of its original release.

Legendary Toys LT-02

I was quite fond of this series, which focused on original-scale, enhanced versions of existing figures. LT-02 is essentially a perfected and fully painted version of MPM-04. The paint job aligns well with my aesthetic preferences, and the build quality is commendable. The first batch had some material issues, which were addressed in the second batch. At the time, this was the best option for the MPM-04 mold. Unfortunately, the series has been discontinued. It was the disappointing build quality and paint of MPM-04 that led me to lose faith in official releases and gradually turn my attention to third-party offerings.

Blue Circus BC-01

Another knockoff of the MPM-04 mold, BC-01 comes from the “Blue Circus” brand. This version is oversized, but the paint job is quite appealing, featuring a subdued iron-gray color that imparts a sense of heft. However, there are some issues with build quality and tolerances. As the most affordable MPM-04 knockoff at the time, it was quite popular, but it has since faded into history.

Black Mamba (BMB) Oversized LS03

This figure is a notable oversized knockoff of the MPM-04 mold, produced by Black Mamba (BMB). Known for their substantial and visually striking products, BMB’s rendition of Optimus Prime is indeed massive, to the point where it only scales appropriately with their own oversized figures. Generally, oversized molds often compromise the transformation experience, making them less suitable for handling and play. This particular figure has several questionable design modifications: the altered shoulder armor results in a somewhat hunched appearance, the redesigned backpack is cumbersome, and the entire model is coated in a glossy finish that can come across as cheap. During its peak, many newcomers were drawn to BMB’s impressive-looking products, leading to a dedicated following and the popular phrase “waiting for BMB’s oversized version.” However, over time, collectors began to recognize that these figures, while visually appealing, often lacked practical functionality.

Black Apple KO MPM04

If BMB Optimus Prime is known more for negative reasons, Black Apple Optimus Prime stands in contrast. Black Apple’s previous modified designs, such as Hound and Trailbreaker, were decent, but the changes made to this Optimus Prime are truly ingenious. Building upon the basic structure of MPM-04, there are still some minor flaws, but I have no doubt that this is the best Optimus Prime mold to date. Due to its numerous advantages, it was once priced exorbitantly, a rarity among third-party products. Its size falls between the original MPM-04 and BMB Optimus Prime, making it incompatible in scale with MPM Ironhide and Ratchet (though it pairs well with MPM-03). Additionally, this figure requires a chest modification; otherwise, the chest area looks unappealing, though this is an issue inherited from the original mold.

002 Bumblebee (Classic Camaro)

Upon arriving on Earth, Bumblebee initially adopts the form of a classic Camaro - a design choice that was thoughtfully executed. Although this form doesn’t feature prominently, serving mainly as a prelude to his upgrade to a sleek Chevrolet Camaro after a skirmish with Barricade, it effectively underscores the protagonist’s underdog status.

Studio Series 01 Bumblebee

As the inaugural figure of the Studio Series line, this Deluxe Class Bumblebee is fairly standard. Its transformation design borrows heavily from the Deluxe Class Bumblebee from “Transformers: The Last Knight,” following the framework established by Masterpiece Movie Series MPM03. Since MPM03’s release, most Bumblebee molds have utilized this transformation scheme. It’s a solid choice for those looking to complete their character lineup. The Studio Series also offers two weathered versions, which address the issue of the roof panel detaching due to the absence of a pin.

Currently, there isn’t a Masterpiece Movie Series figure for Bumblebee’s classic Camaro form from the first film. It seems that both official and third-party manufacturers have shown little interest in this particular design.
003 Bumblebee

Undoubtedly the protagonist of the live-action films, Bumblebee boasts the most screen time, numerous forms, and a penchant for the spotlight. It’s the only character to have its own standalone movie. Why do Paramount and Hasbro favor this character? Perhaps it’s due to its appeal among women and children. The toy iterations are countless, with numerous molds and repaints, and even third-party manufacturers eagerly produce their own versions. However, for many of us in the Transformers community, we’ve grown weary of that skeletal face. Fortunately, in “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” Bumblebee doesn’t dominate the screen as much.

This was my first Bumblebee figure, and at the time, I thought the design was quite ingenious. In hindsight, it’s rather average. The screen accuracy is decent, showing improvement over the versions from the first two films. The transformation follows the standard “car wraps around robot” approach, featuring the typical large backpack and external wheel attachments, similar to the Battle Blade Bumblebee. Its scale fits with the older Deluxe Class figures, but with the plethora of Studio Series Bumblebees available today, few would choose this one.

Studio Series 49/87 Bumblebee

The new mold for Studio Series Bumblebee boasts a pleasing silhouette and innovative transformation design. It employs a combination of real and faux chest parts and features the battle mask head sculpt, a first for the Studio Series, giving it a more appealing look. If you prefer the standard face, you can opt for SS87. The Studio Series consistently delivers excellent detailing, though often lacks in paint applications. With some custom painting, I find this figure even more impressive than MPM03!

Human Alliance Bumblebee

I don’t own this figure, so I used images from a reputable toy database website. Apologies for any potential viewing inconvenience.
I used to be really into the Human Alliance series - there’s just something incredibly appealing about a transformable vehicle with detailed interiors and a small human figure that enhances playability. I’ve collected quite a few of them, including some KO versions. In this lineup, the Human Alliance Bumblebee is of fairly high quality. However, its robot mode is somewhat compromised by the oddly designed feet, which impact the overall aesthetic.
When it comes to scale, Human Alliance figures sit awkwardly between Leader Class and Voyager Class, making them difficult to pair with other figures. Maybe if an oversized KO version appears, it could fit better into a display? Overall, I wouldn’t highly recommend this figure.

Wei Jiang Battle Blades

Wei Jiang’s Battle Blades Bumblebee is based on the Transformers 3 Battle Blades Bumblebee mold. Although it underwent significant modifications, making the original mold almost unrecognizable, in terms of screen accuracy, the changes aren’t particularly faithful. The integrated weapon transformation is a highlight, but beyond that, there’s little to praise. Many used to compare this figure to MPM03, but there’s really no comparison: with oversized feet, fragmented car shell, and external wheels, it has almost no advantages. However, it’s important to note that this is based on a heavily modified Deluxe Class figure. While it scales with the Masterpiece Movie Series, one might wonder why choose this version? Because it is much cheaper 🙂

MPM03 Bumblebee

The first true Masterpiece Movie Series product, and it indeed lives up to the “Masterpiece” title. Upon its release, MPM03 was lauded extensively, leading to a surge in its price and subsequent knockoffs and oversized versions by third-party manufacturers. Many reviewers praised it highly. MPM03 is indeed an excellent mold, but isn’t this the standard we should expect from the Masterpiece line? If we must point out flaws, there are a few: the loose ankle joints and the connecting rods in the transformation design. The most criticized aspect is its oversized scale, making it incompatible with other figures in the same series like MPM04, MPM06, and MPM11, earning it the nickname “the root of all evil” in terms of scale issues. However, if you’re not a stickler for scale, this discrepancy can be overlooked, and the figure remains quite appealing.

Legendary Toys LTS03C Metal

A direct knockoff of MPM03 with enhanced paint applications, LT was once considered a reputable third-party manufacturer, unlike some of today’s subpar producers. It’s said that the first batch addressed the loose ankle issue, while the second batch did not. I own a second-batch figure; the material is reasonably durable, and the paint job is attractive. The only issue is that LT’s head sculpt lacks the transparent eye pieces of MPM03, opting instead for solid blue paint, which diminishes its expressiveness. I swapped in MPM03’s eyes to rectify this. The original Masterpiece paint schemes have always been rather plain; I wonder if others feel the same.
