The Best 10 Transforming Figures – An Editor‘s 2024 Transformers Review
The past year, 2024, was an explosive one for the collectibles and action figure industry, with a significant increase in new Transformers-related releases. Picking just ten standout figures that represent the best of Transformers was no easy task. Therefore, I’ve limited this list to transformable figures that I personally enjoy the most.
A lot of the content on this site revolves around figure reviews, and for me, every brand is worth evaluating equally - official and third-party alike. However, I do still have a sense of loyalty and passion for official products, which is why I continue to review them. This list is, ultimately, a personal record of the year’s best releases, with a strong subjective element.
Instead of ranking them from best to worst, this year’s list features ten groups of figures, with no specific order. Four of these entries come from vastly different design philosophies and lines, making direct comparisons difficult. The only baseline requirement for this list is that all figures must be transformable.
Group 1: 86 Optimus Prime & MPM Brawl – The Most Profitable Official Releases

Recognized as Cybertron Annual Meeting’s Top Revenue-Generating Products, these figures are commercially successful while also standing as some of the finest mass-produced Transformers in recent years.
MPM Brawl (On Sale!) is currently the best representation of the movie version of Brawl. It has a well-proportioned scale that enhances playability, a smooth and enjoyable transformation, and highly accurate robot and alternate modes. The figure also features solid joint articulation, and at an initial retail price of around $180 USD, it’s a reasonable purchase, though right now the price is a lot higher.

While 86 Optimus Prime (New in-stock) isn’t my favorite take on the character, it is the newest design and sculpt, giving newcomers an easy-to-acquire Prime figure that includes a trailer. When compared to MP-44 or the Classics series Optimus, this figure stands out for its robust feel and cohesiveness, earning widespread praise from Transformers collectors worldwide. Its height of 18.5 cm also redefines the modern Classic Optimus scale. These two are must-haves for any serious Transformers fan, and I’m sure most of this site’s followers already own them.

Group 2: NA Slag & Snarl – Masterclass Third-Party Engineering

NewAge (NA) is known for producing some of the highest-quality third-party Transformers figures in terms of materials and craftsmanship. The Dinobot lineup has been a key focus for the company, excelling in both visual appeal and build quality.
However, what truly makes these two figures exceptional is their transformation design. Slag boasts a simple yet fluid transformation, excellent articulation in both modes, and an attractive design. Snarl’s transformation includes an innovative folding mechanism that compacts his wings into a sleek humanoid form - an impressive breakthrough for this character. Overall, the Dinobot team has delivered outstanding results.
Slag and Snarl aren’t limited to just this original color version - each of them comes in 6 different variants, each featuring unique design touches, stunning and refined color schemes. These figures have consistently stood out as some of the finest in the third-party Transformers market.

For me, Masterpiece Beast Wars (MPBW) figures are the highlight of the MP line, but unfortunately, they are released at an extremely slow pace. With the MP line transitioning to the MPG numbering system, we will finally get the Rattrap in 2025.
MP Rhinox is a near-perfect recreation of his animation model, with subtle modern refinements that enhance his aesthetics to the highest level - this is the distinct beauty of the Masterpiece line. His transformation is smooth and cleverly designed, particularly in how it seamlessly integrates the fake-mouth gimmick, without making the process overly complex.
While the waist tab connection is somewhat unstable, and the ankle joints feel slightly fragile, these aren’t deal-breaking issues. MP Rhinox is a figure that would qualify for a “Top 10 of the Year” list in any given year.

Group 4: Transformers LEGACY United Commander Class MAGMATRON – A Three-Dragon Fusion Masterpiece

This figure features three robotic dragons that combine into a single cohesive robot while still maintaining full articulation in humanoid mode. The sheer visual impact of the design makes it a prime example of the imagination and playability that Transformers toys strive to embody.
Additionally, the figure’s height is perfectly scaled to match MP Beast Wars Megatron, making for an impressive display piece. Given the low popularity of this character, it remains surprisingly affordable. For collectors who appreciate unique designs, this is an absolute joy to own:
Group 5: MPG Ginrai – A Childhood Dream Realized

Although it was released later than expected, MPG Ginrai (official name: MPG-09 Super Ginrai) still qualifies as a 2024 figure. For many fans, Ginrai was a childhood favorite - visually resembling Optimus Prime but with a distinct character identity. The demand for a standout Ginrai figure has always been high, yet previous releases never quite delivered.
MPG Ginrai is not without flaws; some areas require adjustments. However, both the vehicle mode and the final combined form are well executed. Personally, I am very satisfied with this figure, as it fulfills a long-held wish for a definitive Ginrai toy.

Group 6: Touch Toys HQ-9BE & J-35C Carrier-based Version – The Best of Chinese Original Transformers

The original J-35C was a hot seller, and this Carrier-based version serves as a pseudo-reissue. If you missed out on the first one, be sure to grab this while you can.
HQ-9BE, a missile launcher truck, introduces an entirely new blueprint for Touch Toys’ original designs. Among the J-35, J-16, and missile truck figures, this one is the simplest to transform, making it accessible for newcomers.
Touch Toys figures stand out for their solid build quality and Black Apple’s signature blend of artistic design and transformation mechanics. These two are some of the most high-profile original Chinese transforming toys, with the upcoming J-16 shaping up to be a potential Top 3 of 2025 contender.

This product took several years to develop, and its high price has sparked extensive discussions. Despite the significant differences between its two modes, it features a relatively simple transformation design with clear and efficient tab-locking mechanisms.
The logical sequence and balanced weight distribution make it user-friendly. The paint application is exceptional, and the multi-segmented joints in the head, combined with well-proportioned limbs, allow for a wide range of poses reminiscent of Megatron’s animated appearances.
Accessories can be fully integrated and stored within the figure, and both modes boast impressive aesthetics. The overall transformation logic, joint configuration, material texture, and craftsmanship make it a standout piece among transforming toys. However, due to the numerous steps involved, handling requires patience.

A mass-produced, transformable figure of this size, especially representing the character Metroplex, fulfills the dreams of many enthusiasts. While it may not be suitable for everyone, it undoubtedly stands out as one of the most striking pieces in the realm of transforming toys. The experience of seeing and handling it in person is vastly different from merely viewing images or videos:
Group 9: MECHA INVASION – Giant Legion (MP Devastator)

This product features an excellent aesthetic design, with individual components offering simple and smooth transformations. The combined form boasts an outstanding transformation design, and its relatively affordable price makes it very appealing to both new and seasoned collectors.
This release could impact the combiner market, prompting enthusiasts to reassess their current collections. The series sets a new standard in the industry, and it’s hoped that more products of similar quality and price will emerge. To attract more newcomers, transforming toys should offer appealing designs, straightforward transformations, and reasonable pricing. This figure successfully combines all three aspects, with its integrated combiner transformation design being particularly noteworthy.

This is my dream machine. It offers a base mode that can transform into a Titan, with various interactive features and mech combinations. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my entire collection and represents the pinnacle of my Diaclone series pursuits. After acquiring this, I haven’t engaged much with the Diaclone line, which, from a certain perspective, has even saved me money. This is Takara Tomy’s ultimate mass-produced transforming figure, free from budget constraints - a true embodiment of an ideal toy.

While this concludes the 2024 list, there are still many personal favorites that didn’t make the cut:
- TransArt Toys’s Final Releases: Flash and Dinobot Warriors
- Emerging Manufacturer Laser Cat
These sets are fun, affordable, and innovative. Their upcoming combiner dinosaur series is highly anticipated:
- Cang-Toys CT-Longyan 02 Pterhowl Swoop, NewAge’s Animation Line, and Robot Toys’s Cheetor, Optimus Primal, and Megatron
It’s uncertain whether these lines will continue.
- MetaGate’s Red Drift and KFC’s Ginrai
Despite their bulky appearances, they are solid figures.
- Knight Rider Transformers
These evoke nostalgia reminiscent of playing with Masterpiece cars.
Looking Ahead to 2025 Top Transforming Toys
Personally, I’m most excited about MPG Rattrap and NewAge’s two upcoming combiners. Recently, the J-16 has garnered significant attention. Its pricing, character design, completion level, and smoothness are impressive and may spark widespread discussion.
