Game Science just turned August 20, 2025 absolutely electric by unveiling the first cinematic teaser for their next Chinese myth-inspired ARPG, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. Fans across platforms couldn’t get enough – Bilibili alone logged over 8 million views within 8 hours, with more than 10,000 bullet-screen comments lighting up the top of the screen as the trailer dropped at 4 a.m. PST. More than 2 million fans stayed up all night to watch the stream – and that’s just on Bilibili!

Who is Zhong Kui?

If you’re wondering, “What’s the Scoop with Zhong Kui?” – great question! Zhong Kui is a powerful deity from Chinese mythology, revered as the king of ghosts and demon hunter. Legend has it he scored highest in imperial exams but was denied his rightful position due to his disfigured appearance. In a fury, he took his own life, but the ruler of the underworld recognized his spirit and appointed him to hunt evil spirits. He commands legions of ghosts and is a cultural icon “summoned” to protect homes and businesses – even featured in New Year rituals.

Game Science Speaks: “More than Just a Folder”

So why switch from Sun Wukong – the Monkey King – to Zhong Kui now? Game Science founder Feng Ji explains that while a Wukong DLC wasn’t off the table, the team is itching to explore fresh stories, mechanics, and aesthetics. Zhong Kui, he says, presented a natural next step: familiar mythological roots, but a brave new direction. “Journey West isn’t over yet… but this one’s going to be different.”

CG highlights hint at a more imposing, ghost-hunting combat vibe, building off Zhong Kui’s legendary “ghost-slayer” persona. Expect darker visuals and “drive-out-evil” gameplay – maybe even pose-based ghost-slaying missions.

Fan Reaction: Hyped, Cautiously Optimistic

“Zhong Kui is less worldwide known but still a super interesting mythological character… the giant demon tiger is a big bonus,” one Reddit user wrote, echoing the growing curiosity among Western fans. Meanwhile, the Chinese gaming community is buzzing – many had anticipated a Wukong DLC, but this move toward something original has been welcomed with open arms.

Game Science didn’t just release a trailer – they invited us into a new mythic world. Tracksuits off, guardians up, and let’s see where Zhong Kui takes us next.
